CGL are different… are unique…are true experts that treat all our colleagues as individuals. Coming to work with us means you will be coming on a journey that we personalise to you.
CGL is a geotechnical, geoenvironmental and temporary works design consultancy with a reputation for solving difficult technical problems and value engineering construction projects. We work on projects in the UK and Ireland from our network of offices in Godalming, London, Exeter, Kent, Essex, Leicester, Harrogate & Dublin. We are able to offer opportunities at all levels within an environment that develops our staff and encourages them to progress in their careers.
Why join CGL?
CGL is recognised as an extremely attractive place to work. We have a proud commitment to continuing your professional development. On joining CGL as an early career graduate geologist, environmental scientist, geotechnical engineer or geo-structural temporary works design engineer, you will be enrolled into our CPD Academy (our in-house structured training programme) and supported through a Training Contract, a formal commitment from us to financially support you for up to five days external training per year supplemented with our biweekly internal training and professional updating sessions.
All pre-chartership staff are supported by a training mentor, helping them to work towards professional Chartered status, whether as a Chartered Geologist, Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist or Chartered Manager. To add to this support, your professional society fees are also paid for by the company. We also have an annual residential training field trip allowing you to develop your skills further.
Working for an SME (Small Medium Enterprise) company, you will get involved in a much wider variety of projects and sites than with much larger multinational companies where the focus tends to be on single major projects such as HS2 or the Lower Thames Crossing.
If you prefer the geology of Devon and Cornwall or more northern rocks, including the Scottish Highlands, then our Exeter and Harrogate offices offer similar exciting projects in these areas. One of our recent projects has been in and around the Isle of Skye, investigating some of the world’s oldest and most exciting geological terrains.

CGL’s London office offers versatility in service lines – from focused and restricted access ground investigation, targeted geo-structural foundation reuse investigations through to Advanced 3D PLAXIS numerical modelling for impact assessments and a full scope of service temporary works design capability. CGL London regularly supports main-contractors bid teams with complex London-based construction tenders (and converting to live construction phase projects), via pragmatic ground-engineered solutions, de-risking uncertainty in the ground and providing advice on temporary works (both below ground and above ground) and finally construction sequence and buildout methodology. Such geotechnical and temporary works design solutions could vary from working platform or mobile crane outrigger checks, all the way to complex façade retention solutions, full-scale basement propping, boundary wall supports and tower crane base design.
These projects provide a fast-track experience, incredible project variety and involvement with many challenging engineering designs. All of our engineers are involved in both the technical aspects of their projects as well as the project planning and project financial management, again with our emphasis on personal development into new skill areas. This is not just us saying this. We have been professionally recognised throughout our industry with many awards, commendations and formal endorsements, including:
Winner of the Consulting Firm of the Year by Ground Engineering Magazine, whose judges described CGL as “great ambassadors for the profession”.
Investors in People Gold Standard. Only 17% of employers achieve the Gold standard, which we have held since 2014.
Recognised as Outstanding by Sunday Times Best Companies
CGL is all about people and every staff member contributed to winning these awards and recognition. We value our staff, supporting their career aspirations and their commitment to being the best in the business.
An exceptional record for diversity and inclusion. 44% of CGL’s staff are female, compared with the UK average of around 10% for the construction and engineering sectors.
Serious professional and personal development schemes. CGL offers professional technical training programmes with routes to chartership with the Geological Society, the Institution of Civil Engineers, and the Society for the Environment. After chartership, CGL offers you a structured management development programme using CGL’s strong links with the Chartered Management Institute.
