This week (2nd–8th March 2025) is Women in Construction Week, an initiative which highlights the experiences of women in the construction industry, as well as inspiring future generations to pursue careers in this sector. This week also coincides with International Women's Day, celebrated globally on 8th March, which celebrates the achievements of women, and serves as a reminder of the ongoing need to challenge gender biases and inequalities in every sector, including construction.
At CGL, we are deeply committed to supporting the values and principles highlighted by both Women in Construction Week and International Women's Day. CGL recognises the vital contributions that women make in every aspect of our business. From leadership roles to site work, women are essential to our success and growth as a company.
Kimberley, Joleen and Anna have shared their experiences of working in the Construction sector, and their advice for women pursuing a similar career:
Kimberley Neville, Associate Director
“During my career as a geologist in construction, I’ve been fortunate to work on a huge variety of projects across the country - from petrol stations to nuclear facilities, landfills to residential developments. I have met and worked with so many fabulous people and I‘ve had opportunities to travel. Every day brings new challenges, and I am never short of something to do! Improving diversity remains a challenge for the industry and I would encourage any young people considering a career in construction to join or develop a support network. I’m hugely grateful for the guidance and mentorship I’ve benefited from over the years, something which I hope to pass forwards to the next intake.”
Joleen Byers, Associate
“I’ve worked in the Construction Sector as a geologist, geotechnical engineer and project manager for some of the largest linear infrastructure schemes for over 10 years. As a woman working in construction, the appeal for me is the ever-changing problem solving, risk mitigation, and people management these schemes require, as well as travelling to some of the most beautiful locations the UK has to offer and adding to my rock collection! My advice to any young female looking to venture into construction is to seek out females already in the industry, as from experience, they’re always happy to give advice or guidance for entering the sector.”
Anna Ormond, Chartered Senior Engineer
“I have worked for CGL for five years now. I am a geologist who loves the outdoors, so I jump at every opportunity to get out on site, explore a new part of the UK and log some cool rock. Recently, I have been working in the rural highlands, supervising a rotary drilling rig on rough terrain as part of the Skye OHL project for Balfour Beatty. My advice: keep doing what you love! By doing a good job on site, you earn respect no matter your gender... that's how I feel anyway.”
CGL are proud to continue supporting and championing gender equality within the industry, ensuring that future generations of women are encouraged, empowered, and equipped to succeed in construction and beyond.
